The voluntary sector in Scotland is facing a number of well publicised challenges related to funding, sustainability and governance, especially as the economic pressures show no sign of letting up. As a result, the demand for Board Trustees with specialised skills and diverse backgrounds has increased as charities seek to support the strategic decision-making process and strengthen their governance structures to address these challenges.
Livingston James’ Director of Public & Not-for-Profit, Douglas Adam, highlights below why you should consider joining a charity board.
Having supported a diverse range of voluntary sector organisations recruit new Board Trustees we feel there is perhaps a misconception that these roles are only for candidates who bring a strong executive CV and extensive track record directly influencing the strategic decision-making process within an organisation. This simply isn’t the case. Charities are keen to ensure greater diversity of thought across their board, attracting Trustees who bring different skills, experience and perspectives, and therefore remain open to receiving applications from candidates whether they are at the beginning, mid-point or towards the end of their own career.
I joined the board of Who Cares? Scotland two years ago, and I can personally testify to the rewarding nature of becoming a charity trustee. It offers both personal and professional benefits. I have shared below some of the compelling reasons why everyone should consider joining a charity board:
- Making a Difference: Becoming a Trustee gives you the chance to shape the strategic direction of a charity and contribute to its mission. Your decisions will directly impact how the organisation serves its beneficiaries, offering a deep sense of fulfilment as you give back to the community and support causes you are passionate about. It also provides an opportunity to use your skills for social good.
- Professional Development: As a Trustee, you are responsible for governance and oversight, allowing you to build high-level leadership and decision-making skills. Additionally, you will gain exposure to areas outside of your “day job” such as finance, fundraising, legal compliance, or human resources; helping you develop a well-rounded skillset and a broader understanding of how organisations operate.
- Enhanced Personal Skills: Trusteeship requires strategic thinking and a focus on long-term sustainability and impact. You’ll also be tasked with tackling complex challenges which will sharpen your ability to approach issues thoughtfully and innovatively.
- Reputation and Credibility: Serving as a Board Trustee can enhance your professional reputation and demonstrate your commitment to social responsibility. It reflects your ethical values and willingness to contribute beyond your professional life, which can be highly regarded in both personal and business circles.
- Exposure to Diverse Perspectives: Charity boards are often composed of individuals from various industries, backgrounds, and experiences. This exposure broadens your own perspective and can lead to more inclusive and informed decision-making, benefiting both you and the organisation.
Becoming a Board Trustee offers a unique opportunity to influence the strategic direction of a charity, allowing you to give back to communities or meaningful causes. On top of contributing to personal satisfaction, it also facilitates professional development by enhancing leadership, decision-making, and strategic thinking skills, while providing exposure to diverse organisational functions.
Ultimately, the intrinsic rewards of making a difference and experiencing personal growth often outweigh the absence of financial compensation, making a Board Trustee role a fulfilling endeavour that we believe everyone should consider.
